the world celebrated the end of WWII in Europe.
After nearly 6
years of global conflict, Nazi Germany signed an unconditional
surrender on May 7, 1945, in Reims, France, and came into effect the
following day. VE Day was a moment of immense relief and celebration
across the Allied nations after nearly six years of devastating
conflict.
Over 26 nations, including major powers like the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, France, China, Canada and the United States, an estimated 61 million Allied soldiers served during World War II across all theatres of combat.
Approximately 16 million soldiers died fighting against the Axis powers and roughly 45 million civilians died due to bombings, massacres, starvation, disease, and genocide—including the Holocaust, which claimed the lives of well over 6 million people of the Jewish faith.
It's estimated that cost of WWII was well over $1 trillion USD (in 1940s value), equivalent to over $15 trillion today when adjusted for inflation.
The war devastated much of Europe and Asia, requiring massive reconstruction efforts post-war, such as the Marshall Plan in Western Europe.
VE day marked the fall of Nazi Germany and the triumph of courage, unity, and sacrifice. It was the day, the guns fell silent.
