The Italian Campaign was Canada’s first major ground participation in WWII. At its highest peak, it saw over 76000 Canadians serving and would cost 25264 casualties.   Nearly 6000 Canadians are buried in cemeteries from Sicily to Northern Italy.  The campaign began with the invasion of Sicily in July 1943 and ended, for Canada, in February 1945.  The 1st Canadian Division was redeployed from Italy to the Western Front where they joined the Allied advancement to liberate the Netherlands and then moved into Germany to help finally end the war in Europe. 

After the D-Day invasion, the Allied troops in Italy, in a jest, became known as the "D-Day Dodgers". The nickname, supposedly first uttered by British Parliamentarian, Lady Astor, implied that the troops in Italy were avoiding the 'Real' war in France. When in fact the 'Dodgers' held down 20 German divisions that otherwise would have been available to defend the Normandy coast. After D-Day, they were the forgotten heroes as they continued their fight to liberate Italy.  Did you know that Liberation of Rome happened on June 5th, 1944?

Most considered the name to be an unwarranted slur and the brave men that fought against Hitler's elite Waffen SS Paratroopers did not care for it.  An extremely clever and sarcastic response came about in the words of the D-Day Dodgers song. It was set to the tune of the famous wartime song, Lili Marlène, which was well-known to the fighting men.

Always on the vino, always on the spree.
Eighth Army scroungers and their tanks
We live in Rome – among the Yanks.
We are the D-Day Dodgers, over here in Italy

We landed at Salerno a holiday with pay
Jerry brought a band out, to cheer us on our way

We all sang songs, the beer was free.

For we are the D-Day Dodgers, over here in Italy.

The Moro and Ortona were taken in our stride
We didn’t have to fight there. We just went for the ride.
Anzio and Cassino were all forlorn

We did not do a thing there from dusk to dawn

We ran a bus to Rimini right through the Gothic Line.
On to Bologna we did go.
Then we went bathing in the Po.

Back to dear old Canada, never more to roam.
Then somebody said in France you’ll fight.
We said never mind, we’ll just sit tight,
The windy D-Day Dodgers, out in sunny Italy.

Dear Lady Astor, you think you know a lot
Standing on a platform and talking tommyrot
You're England's sweetheart and her pride
We think your mouth's too bloody wide
That's from your D-Day Dodgers in sunny Italy

When you look ’round the mountains, through the mud and rain
You’ll find the scattered crosses, some which bear no name.
Heartbreak, and toil and suffering gone
The boys beneath them slumber on
They were the D-Day Dodgers, who stay in Italy.

So listen all you people, over land and foam
Even though we've parted, our hearts are close to home.
When we return we hope you'll say,
"You did your little bit, though far away

With our past fundraising initiatives, people have enabled us to donate over  $98 THOUSAND DOLLARS of which, 54 Thousand was used to successfully commemorate the lives lost by Canadian soldiers on the beaches of Normandy during World War II.
