The Sherman Firefly was a Sherman variation, used by the British armoured and Allied armored formations in the Second World War. Production of the Firefly started in January 1944 and by 31 May of that year some 342 Sherman Fireflies had been delivered to Montgomery's 21st Army Group in time for the D-Day landings
The original 75 mm gun on the M4 Sherman was refitted with the powerful 3-inch (76.2 mm) caliber British 17-pounder anti-tank gun to serve as its main weapon. (They were known as the 17 pounder because the shells weighed you guessed it, 17 pounds or 7.7 kg.).
This British-designed army tank warfare system was finally capable of dealing with the impressive German Tiger and Panther tanks at distance. The 76.2 mm gun was also used to arm the M18 Hellcat tank destroyer.
At the time, the U.S. Ordnance Department refused to have their Sherman’s fitted with the British 76mm gun. The U.S. M4A3E8 Sherman '"Easy Eight", the type of tank used in the movie Fury starring Brad Pitt, also had a 76 mm main gun.
The nickname "Firefly" was adopted due to the bright muzzle flash of the main gun.
Despite all its various flaws, the Firefly is still considered one of the best allied tanks of WWII and arguably the best Anti-Tank weapon going. On paper, the Firefly was able to deal with the German armour / Axis armor and take out all of the German vehicles of the time.
While the Firefly could destroy a Tiger tank it was still vulnerable to the Tiger's 88mm gun. The Firefly Sherman was considered to be the best as they had the advantage of speed and maneuverability so they could maneuver for position easier than a Tiger tank.
It soon became highly valued, as its gun could almost always penetrate the armour / armor of the Panther and Tiger tanks they battled against during the Normandy landings on D-Day, something no other British Army tank could reliably do at that time. In recognition of this, German tank and anti-tank gun crews were instructed to attack Fireflies first.
The Sherman Firefly would go on to become one of the more important Sherman tank derivatives of World War 2 despite their seemingly limited production numbers.
According to the Vets, the life expectancy of a tank crew member was only six weeks.
