Korea War Army T-Shirt The Korean War Code Name Operation Chromite
The
Korean War was fought from June 25th, 1950- July 27th, 1953
With our design, we honour the Sons and Daughters, who answered
the call to defend a Country they never knew and people they never met. It
features a soldier from the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI)
kneeling at a grave of a fellow soldier, all the while being overlooked by the
ghosts of fallen combatants.
The Korean War began on 25 June 1950 when North Korea invaded
South Korea with the intent to militarily conquer South Korea and unify
Korea under the communist North Korean regime. At that time, North Korea was
supported by China and the Soviet Union while South Korea was supported by the
United Nations and its Allies: (South Korea, France,
Canada, United States, England, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Greece,
Australia, New Zealand, Türkiye, Thailand, Philippines, Colombia, Ethiopia, South Africa,
India, Denmark, Italy, Norway and Sweden) Which all considered South Korea
as the only lawful Korean government. The original resolution called on the
North to immediately halt its invasion and to move its troops back to the 38th
parallel. The
United Nations intervened by sending armed forces mandated by the Security
Council Resolution 82. It was the first undertaking of its kind in the
history of the UN.
At the end of World War II on 15 August
1945. The United States and the Soviet Union divided Korea along the 38th parallel into two zones of
occupation. The Soviets administered the northern zone and the Americans administered the southern zone. In 1948, as a result of Cold War tensions, the occupation zones became two sovereign states.
A socialist state, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, was established in the
north under the totalitarian communist leadership of Kim Il Sung, while a capitalist state, the Republic of Korea, was established in the
south under the autocratic leadership of Syngman Rhee.
Both governments of the two new Korean states claimed to be the sole legitimate government of all of
Korea, and neither accepted the border as permanent.
This three-year bloody and brutal struggle left millions of North
and South Koreans dead. The United Nations forces involved
suffered 103,284 wounded with 36,578 Killed in Action,
The fighting ended with an armistice on 27 July 1953, by
the United
Nations Command, the Korean People's Army, and the Chinese People's Volunteers
signed the Korean Armistice Agreement, ending open hostilities.
A demilitarized zone (DMZ) was established along the 38th parallel, and, following
controversial allegations that North Korea had abused and murdered prisoners of
war (POW's), the process of repatriating POW's underwent “neutral nation”
management.
The War between North and South Korea is often referred to as
“the Forgotten War” for the lack of attention it received compared to more
well-known conflicts like World War I and II and the Vietnam War. To this date,
the Korean peninsula remains divided.
The importance of this war in the history of the United Nations and the world is vastly understated; this conflict marked the first clear battle of the Cold War.
Even though the terms of the armistice were tacitly approved, a peace treaty was never signed. So, the Korean War hasn't officially ended!
