From horses to elephants, dogs and cats to pigeons, animals have been conscripted in wartime. Some were best used for transportation, others to deliver messages. For over 2500 years cats played a role in warfare – often at a high price to themselves.

During World War II, carrier pigeons were routinely carried by RAF bombers just in case of the aircrew encountered the danger of ditching in the water and requiring immediate rescue: this was in an era before GPS and satellite locator beacons when rescue was far from certain. Homing pigeons gave the crew the best chance of survival.

Although today’s military uses sniffer dogs to sniff out explosives, cats have their own built-in bomb detectors. Whether they are simply attuned to changes in atmospheric pressure or they have a sixth sense, some cats are particularly good at knowing when a bomb is about to hit.

During World War II, families soon learned to follow their cats into bomb or air-raid shelters, saving many lives. Among the most famous cats was one appropriately named Bomber, this cat could distinguish between the sounds made by RAF and German aircraft from a surprising distance. When Bomber headed for shelter, his family followed, making him a feline early warning system.

For the Navy cats were valued to have on board the ships as Military mascots. Although there are many reasons for this most importantly was to control rodents as vermin on ships can spoil foodstuffs, cause damage to ropes, woodwork, and electrical wiring. Military ships needed cats get rid of rats as a rodent infestation posed risks tthe general health of the soldiers.

Horses in World War II were used by some nations for transportation of troops, artillery, material, and, to a lesser extent, in mobile cavalry troops. The role of horses for each nation depended on its military strategy and the state of the economy and was most pronounced in German and Soviet ground forces. Over the course of the war Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union used more than six million horses.

The PDSA Dickin Medal (the animals Victoria Cross) was instituted in 1943 in the United Kingdom by Maria Dickin to honour the work of animals in World War II. ... It is awarded to animals that have displayed "conspicuous gallantry or devotion to duty while serving or associated with any branch of the Armed Forces or Civil Defense Units"

With our past fundraising initiatives, people have enabled us to donate over 75 THOUSAND DOLLARS of which, 54 Thousand was used to successfully commemorate the lives lost by Canadian soldiers on the beaches of Normandy during World War II.
