The D-Day Wear® Team announces with pride that permission from the The Royal British Legion has been granted and we are able to offer this Grave of an Unknown Soldier commemorative design, indeed an epic design that features an embroidered Poppy over a tombstone of A Soldier of the Great War with the inscription Known unto God
Be Sure To Have A Close Look At The Leaf Of The Poppy, As It Tells The Story Of The Young Soldier’s Life. First, it begins with a young man and friends playing soccer: then we see him running off to enlist for the war; then next he is seen saying farewell to Friends and Family and off to war he goes, innocent as he still has the ball he played with as a child. He gets into battle and he is shot and wounded. He is carried to receive medical attention to no avail; he has succumbed to his fatal injury. A grave digger prepares his final resting place and the last image has someone paying tribute to the young man at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
We cannot imagine the heartbreak it must have been for families to never have known what had happened to their son or daughter; never having the remains sent back to them so that they could have had some kind of closure and given them a proper burial.
After World War One,
a movement began to honour / honor all unidentified Soldiers with a single tomb that
would contain the body of a single Unknown Soldier.
The Poppy represents the International 'Flower of Remembrance'. Red poppies have been a symbol of remembrance and mourning since World War I. The remembrance poppy was inspired by “In Flanders Fields”, the most famous, internationally-revered poems about war. It was written during World War I by Canadian Officer Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae. On Remembrance Day, in Commonwealth countries, people wear a Poppy on the left side: this symbolizes that you keep those who died close to your heart while recognizing and thus honouring / honoring those who gave their all in the military conflicts of our great nations who serve freedom and democracy.
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks still bravely singing fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead: Short days ago,
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved: and now we lie
In Flanders fields!
Take up our quarrel with the foe
To you, from failing hands, we throw
The torch: be yours to hold it high
If ye break faith with us who die,
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields
Composed at the battlefront on May 3, 1915
during the second battle of Ypres, Belgium
The embroidery process requires the shirt to be hooped so that it can be embroidered, some shirts have a hoop mark around the design. This mark will disappear once the shirt is washed. If you would like to wear the shirt before it is laundered, you can dampen your fingers and literally rub the mark away. We recommend that when you wash the shirt, be sure to turn it inside out and we highly recommend that the shirt be hung to dry to keep it in pristine condition. We are in the transition of changing the tombstone in this design to a lighter colour, if you would like to see it before you order, send us an email and we will forward you a picture of the new design.
